ICoN (v1.0) is an application for Windows® performing Blind Source Separation (BSS) of EEG. ICoN extracts
Independent Source Component generated in the observed EEG. As compared to raw EEG the source components in general have higher
signal-to-noise ratio and do not contain interference from other brain regions or from extra-cranial artifacts.
Extracted source components can be fed back instead of scalp EEG for Neurofeedback purposes (professional version). For example, the figures below show a 4s epoch of raw EEG recorded on an ADHD patient resting with the eyes closed. The red plot next to the tracing is the power spectrum. The second figure shows the estimated source components. Note that the first component extracts frontal midline theta activity, which in raw EEG at electrode Fz is mixed with activity in the alpha range.
The next examples show a 7s epoch contaminated by eye blinks and jaw tension both on the left (T3) and
on the right (T4) in the top image. The extracted components are shown in the below image. The eye-blinks are extracted as
component 1 and the EMG as component 9 and 13
The effect of removing those three components from the EEG by BSS filtering is shown in the figure here
below.
ICoN is a simple, user-friendly, fast, efficient and fully automated application.
Finally, BSS is for everyone. |
